Soooooooo, I went to Alaska...

I spent the summer guiding Salmon fishing in Willow, Alaska @ Deshka Landing Charters and Lodge.

I arrived on July 1st to record heat and some tough fishing conditions.  With King Salmon fishery closed in all the rivers accessible to us from the Lodge, we spent the early part of the summer waiting for the pink salmon bit to heat up.
However, my favorite thing to do was to get way upriver and hunt for Arctic Grayling and Native Rainbow Trout... Yes, I said NATIVE RAINBOW TROUT! I was pretty stoked about catching Rainbow trout that were not derived from some hatchery stock.

However, Greyling were totally my favorite.  This was the first one of the season. Much more on Alaska later...

Still on Stones!

Fish are still on Stoneflies. However, don't be afraid to go deep. When you see surface action fish drys! If not, drift a nymph! The fish are HUNGRY!!!

Savage River Gold.

Things have been heating up recently! Pictured here is a "Rare" Savage Tailwater Golden Rainbow Trout! This fish was either pushed through the Savage River Reservoir dam or swam up from the North Branch of the Potomac. Find a good flow and go fish!  There has been a lot of insect activity on the river!

This North Branch Brown was absolutely perfect.

Pre Snowmelt.

North Branch of the Potomac has been producing some decent fish! However, the snowmelt will slow things down, but spring is on its way!

Not Quite Ready For Spring.

While I am not quite ready for spring, it seems like the fish are! It feels like they are moving a bit more and are certainly more aggressive!

I have seen some prolific Stonefly activity recently, snow or no snow, it is time to get out there! The fish are waiting!

Sneaking a Few...

What can I say? Western Maryland does not disappoint. A few hours out before the snow paid off!

Rain in Snow.

I have been sneaking in a few casts here and there. Streamers on a dead drift have been producing some really decent fish.

Still Out there.

Fishing is good if you can find a good flow, if not, throw streamers!

Find a Lower Flow and Find Fish!

The fish are ready and willing, it is all about finding the right flow to fish them. Watch the gauges and fish when the opportunity presents itself!
