Harbor Carp...

These days everyone is all about carp. I don't get it, Never did, Never will. These things live everywhere and they are not all that hard to hook. They are a good bit of trouble to bring in- I'll give them that. However, I am going to have to catch a few this year because I did buy some new gear and I have to justify it. I saw some big ones walking home from the Charles Bradley show last night and figured it might be fun to catch some harbor carp while I stalk the next species on my hit list.

Mr. Bradley, Good Show.

Update: I decided to take a walk down there tonight and scope it out with the fly rod. The white perch hit first cast. The harbor carp are there but were just cruising tonight. I think its a matter of playing the tide right, either way catch-able fish if you time it right. Water was pretty nasty would be a big help if that cleared up but with rain in the forecast unlikely. Oh yeah and a what looked to be a black rat snake snacking on something.

Cross that one off the list.

Rat Snake... Interesting..

I Hate Carp.

Soooooo Drake's Big Year Contest, got me thinking, it has been years since I fished for anything but trout, striped bass, or fluke. Realizing this, it made sense to use this contest as an excuse to catch some fish that I normally would not even bother with (Shad and herring previous post). I do not plan on winning anything because its not really fair competing again someone who fishing in the tropics but whats its going to hurt. I feel as if I grew up exploring waters with my fishing rod in search of something new to catch.

In light of all this I headed down to my local pond to try and cross a few fish off the list. I was thinking bass and bluegills.

But another old friend showed up.

Koi which are just selectively bred Common Carp where lurking around. Casting toward these things I hooked a massive regular old Carp and lost him in the grass. I then hooked an even bigger white colored carp.  I fought him into the night of this city part and lost him because I could not get him over the wall.

So I geared up.
(Although I refused to trade in my ultra light Eagle Claw Glass fly rod I bought for 10 bucks.)

I tied up

Got me a random net man, Earl.

And got me one.
